There is an accessory that has become well-known around the world this past year. How you wear it determines whether it is life-saving or just for show.
The face mask.
Are you wearing yours correctly? It might seem easy, but it is essential to check.
After all, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that wearing a face mask helps reduce the spread of COVID-19. So you must wear it right to protect yourself and the people around you.
Keep reading this guide for all the information you need on how to properly wear a face mask.
Select the Type of Mask
First, make sure you have the right mask for you. There are different types of face masks available. The most common are:
- Cloth face masks
- Disposable surgical masks
- N95 respirator masks
A cloth mask is reusable, widely available, and also can be made at home. There are many different styles too! However, avoid ones with valves and neck gaiters because they do not provide protection.
You can also wear a disposable mask, but everyday use creates a lot of waste.
Healthcare workers usually wear N95 masks.
Wash Your Hands and Mask
You should wash your hands whenever you handle your mask. This includes before and after use and if you touch your mask whilst wearing it.
Dispose of surgical masks after use. If you have a cloth face mask, wash it regularly, ideally between uses.
And while sharing is usually caring, it is not with face masks.
Make Sure It Is Comfortable
If your mask is comfortable, you are more likely to wear it correctly.
Check if you can breathe and talk easily. It should also not be too tight or loose for you.

How to Properly Wear a Face Mask
People have different approaches to wearing face masks, ranging from hanging it off one ear to wearing it under the nose. But these methods are incorrect!
What is the correct method?
Only touch the straps or loops when handling your mask. Tie the straps behind your head, or if yours has loops, hook them over each ear.
You have to wear your face mask over your nose and mouth. A mask worn under the nose does not protect the wearer or those around them.
If there is a metal rim, this sits on your nose. The flat side of the mask goes against your face. It should fit snug to your skin, across the bridge of your nose, and under your chin.
Wear Your Face Mask With Confidence
Now you know how to properly wear a face mask! Wear yours with confidence, knowing not only does it look good, but it is also protecting you and others.
