The Internet has changed the course of technology in three decades, where every piece of device is using global networking. All devices including security cameras, surveillance machines, and banking systems rely on the internet for instant connection and communication. Millions of companies are online, and they come with Windows, macOS, Linux security systems. We cannot argue that Linux is the most-secured environment so we can take it out of the equation. However, Windows & macOS based PC, workstations &servers are not secure.

How did online security threats Increase?

  1. The digital world has unexpectedly grown over the past two decades, and no one expected the business to grow after the dot-com bubble market crash. Many internet-based companies started to grow in developed countries like the USA, UK, Australia, etc. Millions of people across the world started to come online, and all thanks go to websites like Amazon, FB, MySpace, Google, Yahoo, AOL, Blogger, Orkut, and other sites.

Billions of dollars invested in internet-based companies, which is a lucrative business model. Unfortunately, the early stages of the internet had many loopholes in the system, which led to online scams. There is no way to regulate the World Wide Web or the digital world because it is an open space, and anyone can be part of it directly & indirectly.

  1. The situation has gotten worse as smart brains around the world are using loopholes to steal money and data from regular people.
  2. Invaders made threats like viruses, malware, adware, spyware, etc.

  1. Multi-billion companies developed ways to steal consumer personal data.
  2. Many ad networking organizations are placing trackers to record user behavior. Right now, Google is the biggest culprit in the system because they have occupied the space and know everything about you.
  3. Governments are working with software companies to add functions t surveillance the citizens. You can take the Chinese & American governments for instance and they have got caught stealing information.

We can go on but the list won’t end and this is where cybersecurity solutions debuts. Of course, the cybersecurity solutions cannot get rid of all official trackers and surveillance tools from the desktop, laptop, smartphone, and tablet. However, it is well-known knowledge that antivirus & security solutions can remove threats from the machine.

  1. Desktop Security Solutions

You got many cybersecurity companies like Avast, Bitdefender, McAfee, Norton, etc. Millions of small enterprises have subscribed to the solutions for business purposes and secure the computers in the office. We are not only talking about office computers, but also home users. You got many antivirus solutions available in the web market that is equipped with advanced functions to keep the threats away from the desktop. The majority of the solutions come at a price like $20/year, which is a reasonable price for ultimate protection.

  1. The premium protection may come at a cost, but they are worth investing the money on it.
  2. However, many Windows PC consumers cannot afford to purchase a premium license. If a low budget is a case, then you can use Avast (free) & Malwarebytes (free) for entry-level security layers.

Windows PC users can rely on Microsoft Defender or Windows Security, but it is inconsistent. We have tested in the latest Windows 10 build, and it works ok-ish.

  1. Operating System

Corporate spying is no longer a myth, and we have seen the American government demanding the corporates to get rid of such practices. The Canadian government has brought strict Data Privacy Laws for the citizens to prevent corporates manipulation.

Microsoft Windows: The world may not know, but Windows has an aggressive data collection series. Many experts have alleged that Microsoft is trading privacy for data, and the US government may not hold the company accountable.

Apple macOS: As of 2020, Apple’s macOS is not safe anymore as it has a lot of threats compared to Windows. It is massive news, where millions of macOS machines are affected by threats, and you won’t even know about it.

Linux: You may not know this, but Google, Nasa, French Gendarmerie (France Military Police Force), US Department of Defense, CERN (European nuclear research lab), etc.

Yes, Linux is by far the safest operating system for desktop, which big-time players are using right now. Linux environment is a lot different from Windows & macOS and has fewer threats compared to the others.

We have already switched to the Linux desktop operating system long-back.

You got plenty of options like Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, FreeBSD, and more. We are using Elementary OS 5.1.7 Hera based on Ubuntu 20.4 (Focal Fossa). We do recommend the business people to switch to Linux OS for ultimate protection, and it is free & secure.

  1. VPN

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a powerful solution that is protecting millions of journalists, army personal, spies, government employees, individuals, and others. You are connecting to a physical server in another country, which will surf the World Wide Web for you. Your PC IP address will be hidden from the world, and nobody can track browsing history, IP address, activity, and more. Many reputed companies like NordVPN is based in Panama, so your government cannot influence it.

Note: Make sure to read multiple VPN providers because not all of them are secure & safe.

Bottom Line

Readers have to consider these three options to strengthen security. Modern technology has changed the digital world landscape, but it could not eliminate the root cause of the security breach. You got many security solutions and freeware available in the web market, so make good use of it.
